It was a privilege to interview Dr. Steven Hassan, renowned Cult Expert, author of several foundational texts on Mind Control and Cult Behavior. From his early years as a College Student Unwittingly Sidetracked to the Moonies Cult - Hassan tells a story of how Easy it is for one to “unwittingly” get caught-up in a cult, get one’s mind “hacked” - and how Difficult it is to get out.
He discusses in-depth his BITE Model - devised to explain the methodologies used by those who wish to dominate and control their unwitting subjects. BITE is comprised of manipulation and control of: Behaviors, Information, Thought and Emotions of their subjects. These insidious methods have been used and perfected by the Russians and Chinese, and used by subversive organizations well-versed in techniques to “hack” and mislead the human mind.
Dr. Hassan explains that all cults are “not” religious - they can be also be marketing (pyramid schemes), political, “personality” cults and more.
Religious cults do it, political cults do it, marketing cults do, to name just a few - and they accomplish their “undue influence” or “mind control” by creating an authoritarian structure. Followers are almost always deprived of “outside” information and taught that other beliefs and thoughts are evil and must be purged.
Repetition and installation of phobias - hate-mongering and fear-peddling are just some of the techniques used, along with hypnosis - where “key trigger words” are repeated to invoke and cement the new beliefs and fears in the minds of their followers the cult leaders seek to control and dominate.
If this sounds familiar - it is. We see this technique being used by the Donald Trump and his campaign, exacerbated by the use of social media where attention remains in silos - information bubbles where one mind-set is always reinforced and others never explored.
As lawyers, we also see the same technique used by abusive members of dysfunctional families where a narcissistic and egocentric individual seeks to control and dominate other family members for their own enrichment and self-gain.
