Dave Daley tells the American people what his research has found, and he did so in 2024 as well. This updated interview combines aspects of his prior interview laying out the framework of how the American democracy became imperiled. He takes us through the long journey before and after Chief Justice John Roberts takes the helm at the US Supreme Court. From his work as a lawyer during the Reagan administration with a bent to put a damper on voting rights as we see today. C.J. Robert’s work to dismantle the 1965 Voting Rights Act, now seems to be complete.
In the recent case of Louisiana v. Callais, Roberts along with the far-right conservatives on the Supreme Court bench, have destroyed the last leg of the Voting Rights Act. It now appears redistricting to discriminate - to actually remove districts of color, or merge them into other districts, or create new districts to dilute the black vote is okay with this court.
The obvious effect is to disenfranchise people of color so they can never elect a representative of their choosing. All of this takes place under the guise of partisan gerrymandering - even if its effect has a racial basis - as long as that basis remains hidden and unprovable. The Supreme Court has in essence given a green light to state legislatures to draw maps that disenfranchise people of color, preventing them from having representation on the state level, and in the US House of Representatives.
In exquisite detail, Daley takes us through the decades and the iterations of US Supreme Court case, bringing the issues and meaning to the forefront. Through this interview, he helps us understand the depth and breadth of this intentional disenfranchisement of voters of color, the players behind the scenes who put all this in motion - and their unparalleled desire to return the US to the Jim Crow era of vote and minority suppression.
With historical background, Daley allows us to see firsthand the trajectory of Chief Justice John Roberts deliberative decisions to “systematically” disenfranchise people of color, while purposely dismantling democracy as we know it.
